At Newfield Park Primary Academy, we want our children to love learning Maths. Our aim is for all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject by developing their mathematical skills and knowledge.
When teaching Maths at Newfield Park, we intend to provide a curriculum which is tailored to meet the needs of all children. We create a challenging environment where children’s learning centres on developing their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
These skills are embedded within Maths lessons and developed consistently throughout the year. We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of contexts.
What makes Maths learning at Newfield Park even more effective, is how we develop children’s understanding and love of Maths through cross curricular learning; especially in subjects such as Science and Geography.

Nicky Newfield: Our very own Maths Mascot, designed by the children!
Children from Years 3-6 also have the opportunity to take part in the Dudley Maths Championship against other schools in the Borough. This is an exciting time for us and a chance to be proud of the success we have in Maths at our school. We have reached many finals, finished in the top three and have even achieved first place!
Our Maths Quiz assemblies are a highlight of life at Newfield Park and truly make our school unique. Pupils are selected to represent their house teams and work collaboratively to tackle a range of maths challenges. The quiz features a multiple-choice round followed by an exciting buzzer round, where speed and accuracy are key. This termly event has become a firm favourite, with children eagerly anticipating the chance to combine teamwork, problem-solving, and a little friendly competition for some mathematical fun!

As you walk through Newfield Park, you’ll notice our vibrant maths challenges displayed around the school. These puzzles spark curiosity and give children the chance to pause, think, and enjoy solving problems as part of their everyday routine.

At Newfield Park, children across the school have the exciting opportunity to become Maths Ambassadors. Their role is to promote a love of maths through pupil leadership, and they’ve already introduced some fantastic ideas. One initiative that has been developed further is our Mathematician of the Week certificates. A brilliant way to celebrate and reward pupils for their effort and achievement in maths. This recognition not only boosts confidence but also inspires others to strive for success in their mathematical learning.

We are signed up to TT Rockstars and Numbots which is another way we want to support children’s learning. Through these online resources, children develop their maths knowledge in a fun and exciting way. Teachers print off children’s certificates as they achieve their rock status.

Each half term, children will work on a fluency target in school and at home, these are called KIRF’s (Key Instant Recall Facts), the KIRF’s consist of key facts children should aim to know ‘by heart’. By learning these key facts fluently, our children will be prepared to apply these skills when problem solving and reasoning.
