Geography Autumn 2: The Amazon Basin

After our History work on the Ancient Maya focused on Central America, our new Geography topic transports us to South America, where we will study the mightiest river of them all: the Amazon.

With a source located high in the Andes Mountains, the Amazon flows from Peru and into Brazil, where it is joined by countless tributaries and swells to become a truly colossal river - by the time it reaches the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon has a flow rate greater than the next 7 biggest rivers combined. Furthermore, the river basin it creates (a 'river basin' is the area of land where any rain that falls eventually flows into the same river) is the largest in the world, at about 2.5 million square miles. That is about the same size as the mainland USA!

This incredible volume of water, coupled with the hot, humid, tropical climate so near to the equator, also supports the Amazon Rainforest: the greatest rainforest on Earth and one of our planet's natural wonders. It is estimated that about 1-in-10 of all species in the world live in this single biome. No other location has such biodiversity.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to all of our new Year 6 pupils! We are looking forward to an Autumn Term packed full of exciting activities and new learning! smiley

Your staff this year will be:

  • Mrs S Messenger (6M + Phase Leader)
  • Mr M Roddison (6R)
  • Mrs S Priest (HLTA)
  • Mrs K Sharratt and Mr T Roddison (PPA Cover, SLT)

Home Learning

Home Learning tasks will be set every Friday in maths and English, to be completed by the following Friday. Home Learning tasks should be completed in the designated purple (maths) and orange (English) books.

On some weeks, children may also be given a 'Big Think' Home Learning task that will be linked to our topic or a current affairs issue.

There will also be an opportunity for children to complete their Home Learning in school on Monday lunchtime

Both our indoor and outdoor PE sessions will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Children should come to school in their PE kits on a Tuesday. If possible, children should not wear earrings on this day.

Suitable PE kit should comprise:

  • A plain t-shirt in the colour of their House (blue, red, green or yellow)
  • Black shorts, jogging bottoms or netball-style skirt
  • (Optional) Hoodie or jacket on cold days, preferably black
  • Trainers for outdoor PE and (optional) pumps for indoor PE

Year 6 will be given special Planners this year to record their reading and Home Learning, as well as to refer to throughout the day to assist them in their lessons. This will be fantastic preparation for Year 7 and we are really excited about it!

Children should have their Planner with them every day in school.
